CBM & Volumetric Weight Formulas

1. CBM (Cubic Meters):
CBM = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 1,000,000 × Qty
CFT = CBM × 35.3147

Determines sea container fit (Birgunj ICD) and truckload space.

2. Air Cargo Volumetric Weight:
Vol. Wt (kg) = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 6,000 × Qty

Airlines bill for whichever is higher: Gross Weight or Volumetric Weight.

Frequently Asked Questions (प्रायः सोधिने प्रश्नहरू)

CBM stands for Cubic Meters ($m^3$). It measures the total physical volume of your shipment. Formula in centimeters: CBM = (Length cm × Width cm × Height cm) ÷ 1,000,000 × Quantity of cartons. Formula in inches: CBM = (Length in × Width in × Height in) × 0.000016387 × Quantity of cartons.
Airlines and express couriers charge based on either Actual Gross Weight or Volumetric (Dimensional) Weight, whichever is higher. IATA Air Cargo standard formula: Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length cm × Width cm × Height cm) ÷ 6,000. For express courier services like DHL, FedEx, and Aramex, the divisor is usually 5,000.
For LCL sea freight passing through Kolkata/Haldia ports into Birgunj Dry Port (ICD), ocean freight rates are quoted per 'Revenue Ton' (w/m). One Revenue Ton equals either 1 CBM of volume or 1,000 kg of gross weight, whichever generates greater freight charges.
While a 20ft container has a theoretical volume of ~33.2 CBM, practical packing efficiency allows 26–28 CBM of cartons due to dead space. A 40ft container holds ~56–62 practical CBM (out of 67.7 CBM), and a 40ft High Cube holds ~65–70 practical CBM (out of 76.3 CBM).
ByaparOS automatically records master carton CBM and gross weight during packing. When generating dispatch challans, gate passes, or multi-stop delivery run sheets, the system auto-calculates total vehicle capacity utilization and generates barcode-scannable shipping labels.
