Fabric GSM formulas, testing methods, and standards

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter (g/m²). It measures the physical weight and density of woven or knitted fabric. Higher GSM indicates a denser, thicker, or heavier fabric (like winter fleece or suiting), while lower GSM indicates a lighter, breathable fabric (like shirt poplin or chiffon).
Formula: GSM = Weight in Grams ÷ [ (Length in cm × Width in cm) ÷ 10,000 ]. For example, a 10cm × 10cm swatch weighing 1.8 grams has an area of 0.01 m², resulting in 1.8 ÷ 0.01 = 180 GSM.
Formula: GSM = [ Net Roll Weight (Kg) × 1,000 ] ÷ [ Roll Length (Meters) × Usable Width (Meters) ]. This allows procurement managers to verify fabric density without cutting into the roll.
Divide the GSM by 33.906 (or multiply GSM by 0.02949). For instance, a 400 GSM denim fabric equals approximately 11.8 oz/yd², commonly sold as 12-ounce denim.
