Fabric Consideration: If sewing with high-shrinkage 100% cotton fabric without pre-washing, add an extra 3/8″ to 1/2″ vertical pattern length allowance or use our Fabric Shrinkage Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tailoring ease principles, fitting standards, and fractional rules

Wearing ease (ढाँचा खुकुलोपन) is the extra circumference added to exact body measurements so the wearer can breathe, sit, move arms, and walk comfortably without straining seams. Without ease, a fitted garment would be impossible to wear.
For a modern slim fit shirt, master tailors typically add 2.5 to 3.0 inches to the chest. For a classic regular executive fit, 4.0 to 5.0 inches of ease is added across the chest and waist.
Nepali master tailors measure in eighths of an inch (सूत / sooth), where 1 sooth = 1/8 inch. Common fractions include 1/4" (2 sooth), 1/2" (4 sooth), and 3/4" (6 sooth). This tool displays measurements in standard fractional inches.
Fabrics with elastic stretch (like knit jersey or 2-way stretch denim) expand around the body, requiring 0" to negative ease (pattern smaller than body) to achieve a skin-tight contour without sagging.
